Originally developed in 1999 Wheels (then known as
Courier Network) was well received by the sameday
courier industry. Having had a courier company
ourselves, we were in an ideal situation to develop a
low cost package to fulfill the central requirements of
a small to medium sized courier company.
In 2002, we recognized that a number of features that we
would like to incorporate would be best realized if we
completely re-wrote the package from the ground up.
After reaching an agreement with a transport company
servicing clients in the Heathrow area, we set about
writing the new Wheels system in co-operation with their
personnel. Not the management, although they
had some input, but the people who would be using the
software on a day to day basis.
It is largely thanks to this ongoing consultation that
many of the features were incorporated.
Interestingly, some features that we, as programmers,
thought would be useful were never used by the end users
and ended up being subsequently removed.
Central to the Wheels system is the rapid entry
consignment screen. This facilitates the creation
of a job from a phone call or enquiry in just a few
seconds. Routing and distance are calculated
automatically and the route used is displayed prior to
the price being
set.
